Créé en 1995, Gypsophile a d'abord servi une pop ligne claire (Apart in Alep) qui devra ensuite faire avec des influences bossa / tropicaliste (Songs of a Thousand Nights, Unaneelmi). L'album De loin, les choses voit le groupe abandonner l'anglais pour le français, les textes chariant des compositions plus sombres. L'ambiance gagne alors en densité, quand les arrangements s'ouvrent à un bruitisme léger, décidant de pauses ou de coupes souvent improvisées dans l'interprétation des thèmes écrits. Depuis 2004, et la sortie de l'album Les profils des dômes, Gypsophile produit ses propres enregistrements sur le label Lenka lente. Plus facile, alors, de combiner sur disques chansons et expérimentations légères sans avoir jamais à répondre aux attentes - parfois terre à terre - de producteurs extérieurs. Gypsophile began life in the mid-90s as Guillaume Belhomme's very continental (and very French) answer to the bossa influenced pop of 60s A&M acts like Chris Montez, Pisano & Ruff, and Claudine Longet, and of his then contemporaries Blueboy. From 2001's De loin, les choses onwards, Gypsophile has been charting new, twilit territory: somewhere between classical, folk and jazz. Whether you prefer the earlier or the later work, it's all soft vocals and late night atmosphere: slip this on when you and your friends have pushed the dinner dishes aside, dimmed the lights and opened another bottle...
